HBO Max’s announcement of a 2027 Harry Potter update has prompted mixed reactions; the original story feels timeless, yet franchise fatigue is real. Peeves, a hallmark character from the books, never made it into the films after Christopher Columbus cut the part when the child actors couldn’t keep a straight face.

With the HBO Max series having more time to explore the castle, Peeves should be among the first fan-favorites to make the final cut. In the books Peeves is a poltergeist who delights in pranks and chaos, tormenting both teachers and students. His role was significantly reduced in the films—the Weasley twins filled much of the troublemaker space and the movies had little room for characters who didn’t push the plot.

Still, Peeves lives on in spin-offs such as the Hogwarts Mystery mobile game and Hogwarts Legacy. Though often a source of ire for caretaker Filch, Peeves could turn his mischief to good: he opposed Dolores Umbridge and aided Hogwarts in the final battle in The Deathly Hallows.
