HBO's Lanterns trailer keeps Green Lantern powers mostly offscreen

HBO released a full teaser trailer for Lanterns, and it does little to settle the question fans raised after the sizzle reel: where are the Green Lantern powers? The new footage keeps the focus on tone and character rather than on the franchise's signature green energy.

The trailer opens with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) in a car. Stewart complains that he has been training for two months and hasn’t even worn the ring, so Jordan hands him the Green Lantern Ring, drives the car over a cliff, and leaps to safety.

If Stewart uses his abilities, the trailer does not show it. Across roughly two minutes of footage, neither Jordan nor Stewart is seen using the ring to produce the familiar green constructs; the closest moments are Jordan flying while wearing ordinary clothes and a brief glimpse that suggests he might charge the ring, but no energy blast is shown.
