Heath Ledger starred in the short-lived fantasy series Roar
Before he became widely known and 11 years ahead of his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger took his first leading television role in Roar, a FOX fantasy series. The show blends Celtic legend and Roman conquest, offering a vaguely historical setting that leans into magic and myth rather than strict accuracy.
Set around 400 A.D., the story follows Conor (Ledger) after his family and most of his clan are killed. He gathers an unlikely group — Catlin (Vera Farmiga), a Roman slave; Tully (Alonzo Greer), an apprentice magician; and Fergus (John Saint Ryan), his protector — to rally the Celtic clans against the Roman emissary Queen Diana (Lisa Zane).
The series pits Conor’s quest for revenge and unity against Diana and her adviser Gaius Cassius Longinus (Sebastian Roché), an immortal soldier bent on finding the Spear of Destiny to end his suffering. Roar mixes battle and rebellion with supernatural elements, from banshees to druids and sprites, and centers on Conor’s honorable, old‑school heroism.
