Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou) is a single-season animated series on Hulu, adapted from Masakazu Ishiguro’s manga and produced by Production I.G. Short enough to binge in a weekend, the show blends hard science-fiction and cyberpunk aesthetics across a post-apocalyptic landscape.

The story takes place decades after humanity has been mostly wiped out. It follows two groups: a set of highly intelligent children raised in a secure, futuristic research facility, and two survivors traversing the barren surface in search of a place called “heaven” — a destination whose existence is uncertain.

The first episode shifts quickly between those strands, introducing eerie powers among the children and the restraints placed on them by the adults in the facility. Above ground, the survivors face bandits, flesh-eating monsters and rival human factions, and rely on a battery-operated laser weapon known as the A-mk3 or Kiru Beam, which can melt through almost anything.
