Helldivers 2 Discord banned Tiananmen 'Tank Man' meme amid Tencent concerns

On February 17, Arrowhead Games released a trailer for the War Horse armor set in Helldivers 2 featuring Mandarin audio and a Lunar New Year reference. The trailer’s X thread was quickly flooded with the same image: a recreation of the 1989 "Tank Man" photograph made from Helldivers assets.

That image first surfaced on r/Helldivers on February 3 in a post titled "Liberty Square Massacre," which coincided with the Into the Unjust: 6.0.1 patch that introduced the TD-220 Bastion Mk XVI tank; the Reddit thread was later locked under Rule 1. Tensions around the image were amplified after Tencent purchased a 15.75-percent stake in Arrowhead on June 5, 2025, prompting some players to accuse the developer of capitulating to outside influence.

Those accusations remain speculative, though Arrowhead has faced sustained abuse. When the initial Tank Man comment on the War Horse trailer was hidden roughly two minutes after the post went live, the action triggered further backlash and suspicion.
