Anonymous sources who spoke to GameFile journalist Stephen Totilo identified Tencent as the largest financial backer of Highguard, the raid shooter from Wildlight Entertainment. Wildlight has long described the game as "fully funded" but did not disclose that a majority of that funding reportedly came from Tencent, the world's largest video game company with investments including PUBG Mobile, League of Legends, Epic Games and Ubisoft.

Sources say Tencent's TiMi studio group was responsible for backing Highguard's development. The exact contribution and the reason the arrangement was kept quiet remain unclear, though those familiar with the deal described the backing as significant. Highguard launched to a rocky reception despite plans for future seasons, animated lore cinematics, and ongoing updates.

Wildlight, which had about 100 employees across LA and Seattle and many former Respawn Entertainment developers, reduced staff in layoffs that left a skeleton crew; it is not known whether Tencent played a role in that decision.
