Hilary Duff said she and her husband, Matthew Koma, “literally never fight,” but when they do it’s intense. She told Dakota Fanning in an Interview magazine piece that they have “one drag-out fight once a year.” The last blowout came during the Los Angeles fires.

Duff recalled throwing his phone into a Bougainvillea bush, saying, “We had been displaced, we had all the f–king kids, and we just needed to have it out.” Working on her new record exposed another tension: Duff said she doesn’t “speak this language” of making music, while Koma has made music “all day, every day since he was 15 years old.” She also described a recurring fear that he might leave her for another songwriter, a theme she addresses on the song “Holiday Party.” Koma, who participated in the interview, called that worry “insane,” adding, “But also very real.” The couple married in 2019 and have three daughters together: Banks, 7; Mae, 4; and Townes, 20 months.

Duff is also mother to son Luca, 13, from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie.
