The 'History Rocks!' Tour and Questions About Public Education
After nearly a year of cutting staff at the Education Department, Secretary Linda McMahon has launched a cross-country 'History Rocks!' tour meant to highlight civics education as part of America 250 celebrations. Funded with leftover fiscal year 2025 money, the tour sends McMahon into classrooms to speak, lead games and deliver American history–themed activities.
The department ties the effort to the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a partnership that includes the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College and about 50 national and state organizations. Turning Point Education leaders have described their aim as advancing 'God-centered, virtuous education,' and the coalition also lists groups such as Moms for Liberty, Priests for Life and the Heritage Foundation.
A video on the A.F.P.I. site, which features McMahon's image, warns that American education has been 'crumbled from within' and shows a clip of Barack Obama under a headline about Georgetown University hiding religious symbols.
