New prequel Honey could redeem Killing Eve's finale
BBC America’s Killing Eve was a celebrated series about the cat-and-mouse game between MI6 agent Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and the charismatic, sociopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer), adapted from the thriller series by Luke Jennings. After four seasons, Killing Eve concluded, but not exactly how fans had anticipated; Villanelle’s death was heartbreaking and soured many viewers.
Casting has recently been announced for Honey, a series following MI6 agent Martha Schmitt (Ann Skelly), who has to maintain her cover while the walls close in around her. The show comes from Killing Eve alum Sid Gentle and is produced by the BBC in partnership with the German network ZDF.
Deadline reported that Martha Schmitt is actually Carolyn Martens from the original series; Carolyn was initially portrayed by Fiona Shaw, Eve’s MI6 handler. Fan-favorite Villanelle was killed on orders from Carolyn, which could alienate viewers, but Honey might recontextualize Carolyn’s choices and work to rehabilitate Killing Eve in the eyes of fans.
