The confrontation began as the Pentagon pressed Anthropic, summoning CEO Dario Amodei and delivering an ultimatum to accept terms or risk being effectively blacklisted. Amodei said he could not allow his company’s technology to guide fully autonomous weapons or be used for mass domestic surveillance, and the Pentagon's top R&D official Emil Michael responded on X by calling him "a liar" with a "God-complex." Late Friday, Altman announced on X that OpenAI had reached an agreement to deploy its models in the Department of War's classified network and said he opposed labeling Anthropic a supply-chain risk.
