Mining provides materials to upgrade gear and items you can sell for money. To start mining you only need a pickaxe; no quest or other prerequisites are required. Find an ore vein, equip your pickaxe, then hold L1/LB on controller or Ctrl on keyboard to aim. When the circle turns blue you can swing with R1/RB or left mouse click to break the vein.

Each node yields two pieces to pick up, diamonds appear as crystals on the ground, and a marker for the mining spot will appear on your map after you mine it. There are three early ways to get a pickaxe. Complete Rhett’s request from the Hernand commissions on the notice board in town to receive one—Rhett runs the equipment shop and asks you to mine two iron ores; you do not have to finish the quest, though completing it expands your inventory by one slot.

Alternatively, buy a pickaxe from the provisioner’s shop in Hernand for 31 copper coins; the shop sits close to the equipment shop, east of the large tree on the map.
