How 'Yellowstone' star reacted to her character getting killed off on 'Marshals'
The new Yellowstone spinoff Marshals opens with the shocking reveal that Kayce Dutton’s wife, Monica, died offscreen after the events of Yellowstone. Luke Grimes said the move was meant to create drama and push Kayce back toward his military roots, setting up his decision to join a team of US Marshals.
Grimes admitted he hadn’t expected the idea and felt “incredibly bummed,” calling Kelsey Asbille one of his closest friends and the coolest actor he’s worked with. He said at first he couldn’t imagine doing the show without her, but later saw the dramatic potential: “a person in that kind of pain could do anything,” and recognized the choice as a strong story move despite being heartbreaking.
He said he worked up the courage to call Asbille, and they had a good conversation; she handled the news professionally. Taylor Sheridan produces Marshals while Spencer Hudnut serves as writer and showrunner, and the series follows a widowed Kayce joining a marshal team led by an old military buddy, played by Logan Marshall-Green.
