Bethesda Game Studios says it has learned a lot from Starfield and is applying those lessons to The Elder Scrolls 6, especially around the Creation Engine. Todd Howard summed up the change in approach plainly: "I will say the way we approached the engine work – we've done a much better job of it this time." Howard noted that Starfield was made on Creative Engine 2 and that The Elder Scrolls 6 uses Creation Engine 3: "It started with 2." Upgrading in-house tech was disruptive, he added, calling it "an upheaval for the team trying to make stuff," likening the shift to "just pulling the rug out" and saying, "With Starfield, we pulled the rug out." He also described the challenge of working "in tandem with old and new." Developers pushed to improve how they handle engine updates: "This wasn't me saying it; everyone on the team was like, 'We have to handle this engine updating and change much better so that we can be productive.' And I'm giving the team an A+ there.
