Hulu Cancels Buffy: New Sunnydale Revival
Hulu has canceled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, Buffy: New Sunnydale. Sarah Michelle Gellar announced the decision in an Instagram video, saying, "So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale." The pilot had writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, director Chloé Zhao, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast as the new slayer, Nova.
Details about the decision are limited; Deadline noted industry questions about the pilot's status and said Zhao's style "wasn't necessarily the best fit" and described the episode as "not perfect." Hulu plans to keep considering the Buffy IP and could pursue another series, potentially with a different director.
Speaking on the Oscars red carpet, Zhao said, "Our priority for Sarah and for us has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans. So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and we welcome the mystery.
