Hulu’s The Dropout hits harder on a 2026 rewatch

The Dropout, Hulu’s eight-part American crime drama, grows more compelling on a 2026 rewatch. It digs into the Theranos scandal and features an all-time great performance by Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes while asking probing questions about the flaws in the American healthcare system that let a manipulative influencer offer impossible solutions without pushback.

After dropping out of college, Holmes worked with her lover Sunny Balwani to develop a system promising rapid blood tests; before the research was verified, Theranos had a presence in major pharmacies and earned endorsements from world leaders, business tycoons, and powerful investors.

Seyfried does more than mimic interview footage—she finds the self-destructive, narcissistic qualities of a character who has doubled down on so many lies that she cannot rebuke herself. The series also explores the other players who shaped the scandal.
