A photograph taken on Jan. 11 and published in The New York Times shows federal immigration agents on the doorstep of a Minneapolis home carrying military-grade weapons, the Times reported. The image, shot by John Locher of The Associated Press, was captured during immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis and elsewhere.

The Times noted the agents’ helmets, camouflage and tactical gear resemble equipment from U.S. battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan and are the sort of tools often reserved for SWAT and hostage-rescue units. The article details specific items visible in the photo, including suppressors, modular advanced weapons lasers (MAWLs), modernized M-LOK handrails and other battlefield-style accessories.

The piece reports that suppressor production rose by more than 9,000 percent from 2000 to 2021, citing data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and identifies the suppressor in the photo as made by HUXWRX Safety Co., a company that in recent years received a multimillion-dollar contract to supply the F.B.I.

It also identifies MAWLs by B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc., described in company literature as "the superior solution for any low light/no light combat environment," and notes that modern infrared aiming systems can cost more than $3,000. The Times describes other gear seen in the photo: Daniel Defense MFR M-LOK rails on at least two rifles, tan and camouflage "dump pouches" on belts, and a rifle combat magwell.
