Idris Elba Returns as John Luther in First Images From Sequel

Idris Elba is returning to the role that first earned him widespread acclaim. He played Detective John Luther in 20 episodes from 2010 to 2019 and returned for the Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun; that 2023 movie received mostly positive, though somewhat controversial, reviews. Netflix has since greenlit a sequel, which is now in production and eyeing a 2027 release.

The first behind-the-scenes images of Elba as Luther surfaced online earlier this week, confirming that the sequel is filming.

Elba also has several other projects lined up: he will star in the Masters of the Universe movie this summer, which is coming to theaters on June 5. He is expected to reprise Knuckles in the fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie, currently planned for March 19, 2027, and will appear opposite Damson Idris and Viola Davis in Children of Blood and Bone in 2027.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (February 24, 2023; 129 minutes), directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross, is available on Netflix.
