Representative Ilhan Omar was sprayed with a strong-smelling liquid by a man who rushed the lectern at a town hall in North Minneapolis on Tuesday night; security officers immediately tackled and removed him and Ms. Omar finished her remarks, according to the report. The incident came after President Trump, speaking earlier in Iowa, singled out Ms.

Omar as an example of a bad actor, saying foreigners “have to show they can love our country; they have to be proud — not like Ilhan Omar.” The president has repeatedly insulted and dehumanized Ms. Omar for years, using language that has included urging she “go back” to another country, calling her “garbage,” and mocking her hijab.

Ms. Omar has at times received a 24-hour Capitol Police security detail when threats surged, but she said Speaker Mike Johnson had not offered that protection for the past year. After the attack on Tuesday, she made a formal request for extra Capitol Police protection and Mr. Johnson agreed, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Her campaign also sent a fundraising appeal to help pay for private security that often accompanies her at public events. When the man lunged and sprayed her, Ms. Omar lunged back, was restrained by staff and security, and insisted on finishing her remarks. She did not cancel other events for the week and held a news conference at Karmel Mall in Minneapolis the next day.
