Inside Broadway's Lost Boys musical
Vampire musicals are having a moment: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is dominating awards talk, AMC will release an Interview with the Vampire spin-off in June, and previews begin March 27 for The Lost Boys on Broadway. The show’s writers, David Hornsby and Chris Hoch, say they examined what has worked and what hasn’t in the genre while building a production that aims for spectacle and emotional weight.
Hornsby says they wanted to capture the film’s “unique sense of humor mixed with the drama of being a teenager,” and to give the story “big themes and big wants.” Joel Schumacher’s 1987 movie follows brothers Michael and Sam Emerson as they move to Santa Clara; Michael falls under the influence of David, the leader of a gang of vampires, while Sam joins the Frog brothers to stop his brother’s transformation.
Hoch, who was in the 2004 Broadway production Dracula, the Musical, describes the difficulty of steering audience reactions in a genre that can veer between horror and unintended comedy.
