Sometimes it’s a real problem not being able to swear unreservedly in a national newspaper. I understand social convention and propriety, and that swearing is often written off as a sign of poor vocabulary, but sometimes it feels like the mots justes and the only fair response.

The shortest, most honest review I could give reads: “We’re doomed. We’re all doomed,” and the film even advises you to start prepping a bunker now — use your last moments before pulling the plug on the internet to order supplies, buy an isolated homestead in Montana, gather a go bag and go.

Presented by Marianna Spring, the BBC’s social media investigations correspondent, Inside the Rage Machine lays out familiar evidence of the harm online life is doing to us, especially to younger generations. Former insiders, including Matt Motyl — who says, “I know some of the problems more than I wish I did” — describe algorithms that feed on outrage: extreme content and misinformation drive engagement, which sells ads and boosts revenue.
