Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul did not travel to Charlotte, while Dayne St. Clair, German Berterame and Telasco Segovia were named on the bench as Javier Mascherano prioritised the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup second leg. Despite the rotation, a side made up of young players, newcomers and Luis Suarez managed to leave Bank of America Stadium with a point.

The game finished scoreless, with both teams claiming their first clean sheets of the MLS season. There were chances at either end, and goalkeepers Rocco Rios Novo and Kristijan Kahlina combined for eight saves, several of them spectacular. Wilfried Zaha suffered numerous fouls and Suarez found himself at the centre of several flashpoints.

Mascherano was dismissed in the final moments for arguing with the referee, but will take a solid road point and the minutes given to younger players into the midweek continental fixture.
