Goal reports Inter Miami are opening talks with CONMEBOL to seek participation in the 2026 Copa Libertadores that would allow Lionel Messi to compete in South America's premier club competition for the first time.

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas described the prospect as 'a dream' and said he has spoken with CONMEBOL and its president Alejandro Dominguez to explore the possibility, noting precedents in which Mexican clubs have taken part. The club have already featured in the FIFA Club World Cup, won the MLS Cup in 2025 and Messi helped Inter Miami to Leagues Cup glory after his 2023 move to Florida.

Mas said he believes MLS champions deserve a Libertadores place but acknowledged the matter involves CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, and that fresh talks are planned. Messi has a contract extension with Inter Miami through 2028 and is expected to be part of Argentina's World Cup defence this summer, though he has yet to officially confirm his involvement.
