In the season finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall is left wrestling with guilt after the Trial of Seven and the death of Baelor Targaryen. He ultimately takes Egg back on the condition they keep traveling as hedge knights and steer clear of royalty, closing the six-episode story while leaving room for more adventures.

Showrunner Ira Parker says George R.R. Martin has "only been a benefit" as they move into Season 2, with the production following The Sworn Sword and incorporating Martin's feedback. Parker made deliberate choices about some of the finale's quieter moments: reuniting Dunk with his horse Sweetfoot, and adding the final shot of Ser Arlan riding off, a scene captured in reshoots and written late in the process to give the ending the emotional note it needed.
