Students staged antigovernment protests for a second day on university campuses in Iran’s two largest cities, pressing ahead despite a deadly state crackdown. Demonstrations took place on at least seven campuses in Tehran and Mashhad, and videos that were verified showed gatherings at the Tehran University of Art and the Iran University of Science and Technology.

Many students wore black to mourn those killed in earlier unrest. The demonstrations follow a violent security response in January that left thousands dead; rights groups say authorities have arrested about 40,000 people and seized assets from supporters of the protests, which had called for an end to the rule of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

State media has reported tensions on campuses, though officials have not formally acknowledged the demonstrations. Hossein Goldansaz, the University of Tehran’s deputy for social affairs, warned that "radical slogans will only waste the students’ time," adding that he would not support them if protests turned violent.
