Iran’s Students Hold Anti-Regime Protests as Universities Reopen
Students at multiple universities in Iran held anti-government demonstrations on the first day of the new semester, weeks after a deadly government crackdown that had quelled a nationwide protest movement. In Tehran, large crowds — many wearing black to mourn those killed in earlier unrest — marched and gathered at Sharif University and Amirkabir University.
At Sharif, demonstrators chanted “Death to the dictator!” and footage showed clashes between opposing groups. A student group at Amirkabir said protesters chanted “our target is the entire system” and reported arrests after police blocked the university entrance; the semiofficial Tasnim news agency said no students had been arrested, and the state broadcasting network described tensions on campus as limited and short-term.
Student groups also reported demonstrations at a university in Mashhad and at Shahid Beheshti University outside Tehran. The government did not publicly acknowledge the protests, though state-affiliated media reported on campus tension.
