Is 8GB of RAM still enough for a Mac in 2026?
Apple’s new entry-level MacBook Neo starts at $599 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a configuration that may look modest next to many Windows laptops. In everyday use, though, it can be perfectly adequate. I use a 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 chip, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage; at one point I had Chrome with 11 tabs open plus Finder, Slack, Canva, Notes, Atlas, Messages, Preview, TextEdit and Calendar, and the laptop stayed responsive.
I began work at 7:30 a.m. and the battery was still at 65% by noon. macOS helps by using memory compression and disk swapping, which lets multiple apps remain active even when physical RAM is limited. For browsing, writing, email, video calls and light photo editing, 8GB performs well.
Heavy multitasking, professional creative software like Photoshop or running virtual machines can exhaust 8GB, at which point the system swaps to the SSD and you may notice occasional slowdowns. Activity Monitor shows how your memory is being used, and About This Mac lists your RAM and other system details.
