James Cameron says Avatar 4 is "very likely"
James Cameron offered an update on Avatar 4, saying a final decision has not been made but the film is "very likely." He added he will take audience feedback into consideration. Studio executives praised his script, reportedly giving no notes beyond "holy f**k," and some scenes were already shot during Fire and Ash's production, presumably before a time-skip.
Avatar: Fire and Ash fell short of $2 billion but still grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, placing it among last year’s three highest-grossing films. Audiences were receptive, while critics were less enthusiastic, leaving the sequel with a franchise-low 66% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Avatar 4 is currently slated for Dec. 21, 2029, with the fifth and final film set for Dec. 19, 2031. Cameron has floated directing other projects between sequels — including Ghosts of Hiroshima, The Devils, and a new Terminator — though he has said some of those plans are unlikely to happen soon and he may not direct them.
