The Terminator, released in 1984, will stream on HBO Max in the U.S. beginning this March. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cyborg assassin, the film is widely regarded as a pillar of both action and science fiction and holds a “certified fresh” 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disguised as a human, a Terminator travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor. Kyle Reese is sent to protect her and explains that Skynet, an artificial intelligence, will spark a nuclear holocaust; Sarah is targeted because her unborn son will lead the resistance.

Made for a modest $6.4 million by a then-unknown James Cameron, the movie was intended as a lean sci-fi B-movie. Much of the script was written to keep costs down, favoring grittier, more intimate scenes over large-scale set pieces — a choice that helped it stand out.
