James Gunn reacts to Warner Bros. Discovery–Netflix deal and DCU uncertainty
Movieweb reports James Gunn has commented on the impending sale of Warner Bros. Discovery to Netflix and what the move could mean for the DC Universe and his role within it.
Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Gunn said the situation is unknown but “really exciting,” adding, “Do I have hopes? No, I really don’t because everything’s unknown. I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. So I hope and pray for the best.” He also warned that having been through similar changes before he is “always be careful what you wish for because you don’t really know until you know,” and said he is excited about the possibilities. The report notes the deal is not yet “done” and that while some fans expect a return to Zack Snyder’s projects, immediate plans for the DC franchise likely remain unchanged.
The article says Gunn’s DCU still faces challenges: Superman finished its theatrical run at $616 million, compared with the $670 million of Man of Steel, and upcoming releases include Supergirl starring Milly Alcock (which will feature Jason Momoa’s Lobo), a horror-leaning Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow in 2027. The performance of those films and casting decisions for the DCU’s Batman are presented as possible deciding factors for the franchise’s next direction amid the ongoing uncertainty.
