James Trafford says Donnarumma transfer blindsided him and could prompt exit
James Trafford says he was taken by surprise when Pep Guardiola signed Gianluigi Donnarumma after Trafford rejoined Manchester City in the summer of 2025 from Burnley for £27 million. Donnarumma was acquired from Paris Saint-Germain for £26m and immediately became City’s first-choice, leaving the 23-year-old as the club’s backup.
Guardiola began the season with Trafford as his starter, but he has not featured in the Premier League since August 31 and has been used mainly in cup competitions, making 11 appearances across all tournaments. Trafford acknowledged the situation: “I didn't expect the situation to happen, but it happened, so just get on with it.
It’s happened so I work very hard every day and see what happens, give it my best shot.” Guardiola has described him as: “He is so reliable. Fantastic keeper.” Trafford says he was never promised a guaranteed No.1 spot but had expected to be ahead in the pecking order.
