James Wan is returning to the Saw franchise to help steer its next entry and to revisit the qualities that made the 2004 original notable. The first film, directed by Wan and written by and starring Leigh Whannell, introduced a groundbreaking approach to serial-killer and psychological horror and created a villain whose motives complicated his crimes.

Wan told Letterboxd he wants the revival to "hark back to the spirit of the first movie" and to be frightening in a deeper way. "One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw – not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie," he said.

While Wan is expected to supervise the project rather than direct, Whannell will return to oversee production.
