Jason Statham & Sylvester Stallone's 'Homefront' Trends on Netflix
More than a decade after its 2013 release, Homefront has resurfaced on Netflix and sits as the streaming service's third most popular movie. Directed by Gary Fleder and based on Chuck Logan's novel, the film stars Jason Statham as retired DEA agent Phil Broker, whose quiet life is upended when a ruthless drug lord, Gator Bodine (James Franco), threatens him and his family.
The cast also includes Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth and Frank Grillo. Sylvester Stallone does not appear on screen; he wrote the screenplay. The project began as a proposed Rambo sequel, with Stallone originally scripting the role for himself to pit Rambo against ruthless drug dealers while protecting a daughter.
After the project sat for nearly a decade, Stallone decided he was too old to play the part and rewrote the script for Statham. Critical and audience reaction has been mixed: Homefront holds a 42% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 61% audience rating.
