Jason Statham’s $200 Million Crowd-Pleasing Blockbuster Has Aged Like Fine Wine
Jason Statham remains one of the biggest action stars in the world. He first broke out in films like Crank and The Transporter and has since launched original thrillers such as The Beekeeper. His latest, Shelter, earned the best review scores of any of his films in the past decade, but it has struggled at the box office.
One role that has delivered consistent returns is Deckard Shaw. The character first appeared uncredited in 2013’s Fast & Furious 6, and Statham moved into a featured villain role in Furious 7. That turn is still regarded as one of his stronger performances, and audiences have long hoped to see him explore similarly sinister territory again.
Statham teamed with Dwayne Johnson for the 2019 spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, which grossed more than $750 million worldwide against a $250 million budget and holds a 67% critics score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has lost its streaming home in the United States but is charting on the Apple TV top 10 in several countries.
