Jeff Kaplan: AI Can’t Replace 'Human Spirit'
Jeff Kaplan, the former director of Overwatch, spoke at length with Lex Fridman about his career, leaving Blizzard in 2021, and his new project. The five-hour interview is a rough watch at times, with Kaplan talking candidly about the intense pressure from Activision Blizzard higher-ups while developing the hero shooter.
When asked about AI in games, Kaplan called current attempts to integrate the technology "mostly a hot mess." Fridman floated scenarios like NPCs with AI-generated dialogue that could evolve beyond a static narrative, but Kaplan pushed back, noting that ChatGPT cannot come up with dialogue with heart and soul.
He said AI might help with mundane logistical tasks, yet the technology and its promoters are "overconfident" about what it can do. Kaplan shared a concrete example: he used ChatGPT to try to solve a UI problem outside his expertise, and the bot "overconfidently" gave the wrong answer.
