Collider reports Breaking Bad alum Jesse Plemons described the script for Tom Cruise's upcoming film Digger — the actor's first original action movie in years and his first collaboration with director Alejandro González Iñárritu — as one of the strangest, funniest and most tragic scripts he had read.

The film will reportedly follow the most powerful man in the world who causes a disaster and then sets out to fix it, aiming to prove himself the savior of humanity. Plemons compared the screenplay to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove before saying it becomes something else entirely, and praised Cruise for showing an unexpected dramatic range rather than relying on death-defying stunts. The movie's teaser did not reveal Cruise's full look but reportedly shows his silhouette in shorts, a shirt and boots, dancing with a shovel.

The piece lists Digger's credits as director Alejandro González Iñárritu; writers Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Sabina Berman and Alexander Dinelaris; and producers Iñárritu, Tom Cruise and Mary Parent. The film is currently slated for October 2, 2026, while plot specifics remain scarce, and Justin Theroux said a Tropic Thunder spin-off tied to Cruise has ideas but no start date.
