Jessie Buckley’s The Last Post Is a Forgotten Gem
After her Oscar-winning turn in Hamnet, Jessie Buckley is worth revisiting in the BBC drama The Last Post, which first premiered on November 5, 2017. She plays Honor, an army wife whose role—to keep quiet and conform—grows harder as tensions around her rise. Set in British-controlled Aden, Yemen in 1965, the series follows newlyweds Honor and Joe Martin as they arrive at a Royal Military Police base and attempt to adjust to life on the outpost.
Joe is a captain with the RMP, while Honor is expected to assimilate with the other army wives; a scandal involving Captain Nick Page and Alison Laithwaite strains relationships as nationalist groups push for independence and the unrest moves toward the real-life Aden Emergency.
Peter Moffat created and wrote the series, drawing on his father’s experience as an RMP officer. The ensemble cast includes Jeremy Neumark Jones, Joseph Kennedy, Jessica Raine, Tom Glynn-Carney, Chris Reilly, Stephen Campbell Moore, Ouidad Elma and Ben Miles.
