JetBlue plane makes emergency landing at Newark after smoke in cabin
A JetBlue flight from New Jersey to Florida made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport after smoke was reported in the cabin. The airline also reported an engine issue. JetBlue said flight 543 from Newark to West Palm Beach returned shortly after takeoff following the report.
The aircraft landed safely, passengers and crew evacuated using the aircraft's slides, and no injuries were reported. FlightRadar24 data showed the Airbus A320 making a circular loop above Newark. It departed at 5:30 p.m. ET, 45 minutes later than scheduled, and returned about 20 minutes later.
There have been several recent US flights that made emergency returns because of smoke. In November, a United flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong turned back after crew detected a "burning rubber smell in the cabin." Last February, a Delta flight from Atlanta to Columbia returned after 10 minutes, with the pilot saying, "Got smoke in the cabin and need to plan a return back.
