Joel Klein Held Multiple Meetings With Jeffrey Epstein in 2013
Joel Klein, the former New York City schools chief, met repeatedly with Jeffrey Epstein in 2013, years after Epstein was convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor. Klein had left government and was leading Amplify, an education technology company, when the meetings began at the request of his friend Mortimer Zuckerman, who was considering hiring Epstein for estate planning.
Klein advised against the hire; the Zuckerman family declined to answer questions on the record. Emails and Justice Department documents show the discussions stretched beyond estate planning to shared interests in education. Epstein, who sought to burnish his reputation through philanthropy, announced investments in charter schools and other K-12 efforts and exchanged messages about learning and brain science and the potential of video games and other technologies to improve student outcomes.
Klein met Epstein at least six times in 2013 — at a dinner at Epstein’s Manhattan home with Zuckerman and others, and in breakfasts and afternoon meetings.
