Joey Barton is facing financial ruin after a string of court cases has left him with legal bills approaching £1 million. He was denied bail after being charged with grievous bodily harm over an alleged fight at a golf club in Liverpool and is currently being held on remand; co-defendant Gary O'Grady, 50, has been granted bail.

This month Barton was ordered to pay £339,000 plus legal costs to former England international Eni Aluko after comparing her to serial killer Rose West on social media. That followed a libel case brought by BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine over posts on X labelling him a "nonce" and a "paedo defender"; Vine confirmed last summer that Barton had covered his legal costs, saying the battle had cost the former midfielder, "by his account, £600,000".

His business affairs have also suffered.
