John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is messy B-movie fun
Saber Interactive blends its World War Z and MudRunner experience in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, a cooperative zombie-killing game that pairs gunplay with muddy vehicle traversal. The game can be clunky and chaotic and lacks the elegance of peers like Left 4 Dead, but it’s a surprisingly fun entry that plays best with friends.
Four mercenaries venture into an exclusion zone dominated by an ancient Sludge God; their infection grants powers while a ticking clock pushes them to subdue the threat. The commanded solution is often simple — shoot it, blow it up, or run it over — and AI teammates are serviceable in a pinch but make the experience feel best with human players.
Each of the four classes offers distinct tools (the Strike’s explosive fireball, the Medic’s healing sphere, the Defender’s barrier, and the Operator’s drone) and a large skill tree that can be reassigned as you experiment.
