John Harbaugh appears headed to Giants but contract remains unsigned
According to Cbssports, John Harbaugh appears poised to become the next head coach of the New York Giants after visiting the team on Wednesday, but no contract has been finalized.
Reports said Harbaugh decided to take the job that night and fans celebrated, but two days later there was still no deal: the team had all day Thursday to finalize a contract and, as of Friday morning, nothing had been signed. The report noted this most likely means nothing, but pointed out at least two occasions since 2000 when coaches who appeared to accept jobs changed course, citing Bill Belichick in January 2000 (who resigned on a napkin) and Josh McDaniels on Feb. 6, 2018.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media said a deal could come on Friday but that there is also a small chance it might not, and that talks continue without the outcome being a foregone conclusion. Matt Zenitz reported on Friday morning that the two sides are still trying to finalize a deal and the full expectation remains that it will get done, and Giants beat writer Art Stapleton said the agreement is understood to be in place while lawyers iron out contract language. Because Harbaugh has not signed, other teams remain free to contact him; he was scheduled to interview with the Titans on Thursday but called it off, the presumption being he was headed to the Giants, and the hire is not official until the contract is signed.
