John Terry said he wanted to be named caretaker manager after Enzo Maresca was sacked but was overlooked in favour of academy colleague Calum McFarlane. Terry is a consultant for the Blues' Under-18 and Under-21 sides and is close with McFarlane, who took charge of two senior games before Liam Rosenior's arrival.

He reacted on TikTok shortly after the sacking, saying: "Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea and to be honest I'm completely shocked, I didn't see it coming. I know things of late haven't been how he would like. You can see and hear that there’s been tension." He added that he had had so many phone calls and that "I haven't got a clue what's happening, I'm not involved in the first team so I don't know." On Jimmy Bullard's 'Golf Life' channel, Terry said he would have stepped in and felt "(I wasn't) annoyed, probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that U21s group that went over." He went on: "People have got to make decisions.

I love it when people make decisions and they go yes or no.
