Josh Shapiro announces Pennsylvania re-election bid with large cash reserve
Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania formally launched his re-election campaign on Thursday, releasing an announcement video and saying he would continue his work in the state. He is also releasing a memoir later this month. In the video Mr. Shapiro framed himself as a pragmatic politician focused on economic growth, affordability, public safety and education, including expanding state opportunities for people without college degrees.
He declared, “We’ve gotten stuff done all across our Commonwealth,” the report said, adding that he used a more colorful word than “stuff.” He also alluded to efforts to protect abortion rights and to reject former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, and plans campaign events in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Mr. Shapiro begins the race with significant advantages: his campaign announced he ended 2025 with more than $30 million in cash on hand, which his team said was a state record, and he has repeatedly earned high approval ratings. Nationally he is widely seen as a rising Democratic figure, was a finalist in the 2024 vice-presidential search and is often floated as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.
Republicans hope to narrow his advantage, and the state party is backing Treasurer Stacy Garrity; a Quinnipiac University poll last fall showed 13 percent of respondents had a favorable view of Ms. Garrity, 12 percent an unfavorable view and 73 percent saying they hadn’t heard enough about her, while Mr.
