Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital days after a car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends. Regional governments of Lagos and Ogun said the British-Nigerian boxer is now recovering at his home in the country. The statement said he left hospital late in the afternoon, heavy‑hearted and emotional over the loss.

Joshua was travelling in the back of a black SUV when it hit a stationary truck on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu. The crash, at about midday local time, killed Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The federal road safety corps said preliminary findings suggest the Lexus suspected of being involved was travelling above the legal limit, lost control while overtaking and struck the parked truck.

It said excessive speed and wrongful overtaking are leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways. Police said Joshua suffered minor injuries. His spokesperson described Mr Ghami and Mr Ayodele as close friends who were integral members of his team. Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home on Wednesday to pay their respects ahead of the victims' repatriation to the UK.

The regional statement thanked the doctors and staff at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their care.
