Judge Orders Return of College Freshman Mistakenly Deported to Honduras
A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to return Any Lucia López Belloza, a 19-year-old Babson College freshman, to the United States within two weeks after she was mistakenly deported to Honduras in November. Judge Richard G. Stearns had earlier recommended that the government issue a visa so she could continue her studies while her immigration case proceeded in court.
The order followed an acknowledgment in January that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer had made a mistake and that an ICE employee failed to activate a system that would have alerted other jurisdictions that her case was under judicial review. Judge Stearns wrote, "In this unfortunate case, the government commendably admits that it did wrong," and added, "Now it is time for the government to make amends." The government has acknowledged the error but, the judge wrote, refused to correct it voluntarily.
