Kacey Musgraves says feud with Miranda Lambert began over a song
Kacey Musgraves says her years-long rift with Miranda Lambert began with the 2011 hit “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which she wrote for herself and had planned to release as her first single. She described a period as a staff writer when she was finally collecting songs that felt like her and didn’t want to pitch them to others.
Musgraves said the song was pitched to Lambert without her consent or knowledge, and because Lambert was a bigger star at the time, she ended up putting it on her album Four the Record. Musgraves called the situation “tricky,” noting she had co-writers to consider and that both singers came from nearby, small Texas towns before taking different paths to Nashville.
Looking back, Musgraves said losing that song pushed her to write “Merry Go Round,” which better suited her debut record and went on to win the 2014 Grammy for best country album. More recently Musgraves reached out to Lambert to co-write and record “Horses and Divorces” for her upcoming album Middle of Nowhere.
