Kalvin Phillips sent off after straight red in Steel City derby
Kalvin Phillips was shown a straight red card on Sunday for a shocking challenge in the Steel City derby. The Manchester City midfielder, who moved on loan to Sheffield United at the end of the January transfer window, was dismissed early in the second half for a poor challenge on Svante Ingelsson and lasted just 49 minutes.
Phillips had joined the Blades in search of regular minutes after struggling for game time at Pep Guardiola's side, and he had made his first start for Sheffield United against Portsmouth. Ahead of the derby he said: "I want to play as many games as possible," and spoke of preferring to be "put in the deep end" rather than work his way into a Premier League team.
The red card means more time on the sidelines for Phillips. The 30-year-old will spend the rest of the season with Sheffield United and is due to return to Manchester City, where he remains under contract until 2028.
