Karl Urban Sci-Fi Action Thriller 'Dredd' Finds New Streaming Home
Karl Urban's 2012 sci-fi action thriller Dredd will land on Tubi on March 31, ending a spell in which the film was unavailable on streaming. Directed by Peter Travis and written by Alex Garland, the movie was based on a 2000 AD comic strip and later found an audience on home video and streaming, eventually amassing a cult following.
The story takes place in the dystopic Mega-City One, where Urban plays judge, jury, and executioner as he and his partner try to bring law and order to a 200-storey high-rise controlled by the ruthless drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). Much of the film is confined to the Peach Trees block, a choice that creates intense pacing and a growing sense of foreboding.
Travis' approach is darker and more grounded than the earlier film starring Stallone, with violence that is brutal rather than exaggerated. Urban never removes his helmet in this version, a choice that keeps the movie closer to the source material, and the film often plays like a sci-fi, more stylized and vicious take on Die Hard.
