Kemi Badenoch says Trump was 'morally right' to seize Venezuela's Maduro
Independent.co reports that Kemi Badenoch praised Donald Trump’s seizure of Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro as “morally right” following an operation by US special forces in Venezuela.
She described Venezuela as “a brutal regime” and said Britain had not recognised it as a legitimate government, adding: “I think that what’s happened is quite extraordinary. But I understand why America has done it.” Badenoch said the legal position was uncertain but that “morally I do think it was the right thing to do,” and that she was “glad Maduro has gone; he was making people’s lives a living hell.” Drawing on her childhood in Nigeria, she said she understood the impact of military rule and repeated “Morally, yes” when asked if the raid was right.
She acknowledged the action raised “serious questions about the rules-based order,” criticised the prime minister for “hand wringing” and “projecting weakness,” and said international law is “what countries agree to.” Badenoch also cited claims by Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado about foreign involvement and asked, “Where were the people talking about international law then?” She said her support did not extend to Mr Trump’s threats over Greenland, calling it “not for sale” and saying “what happens to Greenland is up to Denmark and the people of Greenland.”
