Kendrick Lamar earned his second consecutive record of the year trophy, sharing the award with SZA for their duet 'Luther'. He had taken the category the previous year with 'Not Like Us'.

The 38-year-old had previously won 22 Grammys and led all nominees this year with nine nods. 'Luther' was also nominated for song of the year, and Lamar's album 'GNX' was up for album of the year and best rap album.

SZA entered the ceremony with five Grammys and until this year had not won in the awards' top all-genre categories; she had won best R&B song the year before for 'Saturn'.

'Luther' was released in November 2024 as part of 'GNX', peaked at No. 1 and spent 46 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The song samples 'If This World Were Mine', and a Times critic called it the album's most tender moment. Lamar said the award was special and noted that Luther Vandross is one of his favorite artists.
